Meet Robert May
Robert May is a founding attorney of The May Firm, a California personal injury practice he built alongside his brothers Garrett May and Cameron May. The firm started in San Luis Obispo and has grown to nine offices across California, including Bakersfield, Fresno, Long Beach, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Visalia, Salinas, and Chula Vista. The May Firm represents accident victims only — never insurance companies — and has recovered more than $400 million for over 10,000 injured clients statewide. Robert is known for treating every client like family, an approach captured in the firm's guiding promise: Our Family Fighting For Yours.
Robert May founded The May Firm with a singular vision: to deliver the same quality of personal injury representation Californians can find in Los Angeles or San Francisco to the working families who live and drive on Highway 101, Highway 99, the Grapevine, the 405, and the freeways and farm roads of the Central Coast and Central Valley. As a teenager Robert was the victim of a serious personal injury and had to navigate the claims process as a plaintiff without knowing what he was entitled to — an experience that shaped his decision to attend California Western School of Law and build a firm where every client is treated like family. Today The May Firm has nine California offices, has recovered more than $400 million for over 10,000 clients, and handles every major personal injury matter from car accidents and trucking collisions to wrongful death, sexual abuse, spinal cord injuries, and defective product cases. The firm's results include a $10 million sexual abuse settlement and a $6.875 million spinal injury recovery. Robert leads the firm alongside his brothers — Garrett May, who heads the litigation department, and Cameron May, the firm's pre-litigation director — and the team is bilingual by default, serving Spanish-speaking communities across California with the same depth of representation as English-speaking clients ("Se Habla Español").
What Inspired Robert?
Robert May's path to becoming a personal injury attorney began with his own injury. As a teenager he was hurt badly enough to have to file a claim and deal with insurance adjusters, and he learned firsthand how lopsided the personal injury system feels when you do not know your rights. That experience never left him. After law school at California Western, Robert returned home to Santa Maria — a town where his family has lived for four generations — and built a practice in the communities he grew up in rather than relocate to a big-city firm. He believes the people of California's Central Coast, Central Valley, and inland regions deserve the same caliber of representation as accident victims in Los Angeles or San Francisco, and he has built The May Firm around that belief. The therapy dog Copper greeting clients in the lobby, the surfboard on the office wall, and the bilingual intake team are not branding — they are the daily expression of how Robert thinks injured people deserve to be treated.
Mission & Vision
The mission of The May Firm is to deliver aggressive, compassionate personal injury representation to Californians who have been hurt — and to do it the way Robert and his brothers would want their own family treated. The firm operates exclusively on a contingency-fee basis: clients pay nothing unless The May Firm recovers compensation for them. The firm represents accident victims only, never insurance companies, which means every case decision is made with the client's interests at the center. From nine offices spanning the Central Coast, Central Valley, Long Beach, and the South Bay, the firm serves English-speaking and Spanish-speaking communities with the same depth of preparation and the same bilingual access to a lawyer. The May Firm is committed to giving every client direct attorney access, transparent communication about case value and timeline, and the choice between negotiation and trial — not the fastest settlement, the right one.
Career History
Robert May's legal career has been built entirely in service of injured Californians. After earning his Juris Doctor from California Western School of Law and his admission to the State Bar of California, Robert co-founded The May Firm with his brothers Garrett and Cameron and opened the practice in San Luis Obispo. Over the years the firm has expanded to nine offices across California — Bakersfield, Fresno, Long Beach, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Visalia, Salinas, and Chula Vista — and has recovered more than $400 million in verdicts and settlements for more than 10,000 clients. Robert has personally handled cases from early investigation through negotiation and, when necessary, trial, including catastrophic-injury matters, wrongful-death claims, sexual-abuse litigation, and complex multi-vehicle and trucking collisions. Notable firm results during his tenure include a $10 million settlement in a sexual abuse case and a $6.875 million spinal-injury recovery. Robert hosts the firm's podcast, Car Accident Attorney with Robert May, where he answers the questions accident victims most often ask but rarely get straight answers to.

Guiding Principles
The core values that drive Robert May and The May Firm in every case they handle.
Family Values
Every client is treated like family — that is the rule, not the slogan. Robert and his brothers built the firm on the principle that the people who walk in the door deserve the same caliber of representation they would want for their own.
Client Interest First
The May Firm represents accident victims only — never insurance companies. Every case decision is made with the client's interests at the center, including the choice between a fast settlement and the right one.
Accessibility
Bilingual intake (English / Spanish) is available 24/7 across all nine California offices, and clients have direct access to a real attorney rather than a case manager. No fees unless the firm wins.
Team Approach
The firm is led by three May brothers — Robert (founder), Garrett (litigation), and Cameron (pre-litigation) — coordinating a single trial-ready case strategy from the first call through verdict.
Integrity
Honest assessments of case value, plain-English communication, and full disclosure of fees and case costs. Robert says it the way he would say it to family at the kitchen table.
Continuous Improvement
The firm invests in modern legal technology and bilingual workflow so attorneys spend their time on strategy and clients, not on paperwork — and so a client in Salinas gets the same representation as one in San Luis Obispo.

Practice Areas
Robert May and The May Firm specialize in personal injury cases where another party caused the harm.
Car Accidents
Robert May represents California drivers, passengers, and pedestrians injured in car accidents on Highway 101, the 99, the 405, the Grapevine, and the surface streets of Bakersfield, Fresno, Long Beach, San Luis Obispo, and the Central Coast. The firm handles rear-end collisions, intersection crashes, distracted-driving cases, and DUI-related incidents.
Truck Accidents
The May Firm handles complex commercial-truck and 18-wheeler cases involving multiple insurance carriers, federal trucking regulations, and the kind of catastrophic injuries that come from a fully loaded big rig on the Grapevine, I-5, the 99, or the 101. Robert and his litigation team build these cases against the carrier — not just the driver.
Motorcycle Accidents
Robert May advocates for motorcyclists injured on California highways and surface streets. The firm fights the anti-motorcycle bias common in jury pools and adjuster files, and handles left-turn collisions, lane-splitting disputes, and visibility-based crashes statewide.
Wrongful Death
The May Firm provides compassionate representation to California families who have lost a loved one in a car, truck, motorcycle, or other negligence-related incident. Robert guides families through California's wrongful-death and survival statutes while pursuing full compensation for funeral costs, lost support, and loss of companionship.
Spinal Cord & Catastrophic Injuries
Robert May handles catastrophic personal-injury matters, including spinal-cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, amputations, and severe burns. The firm's notable results include a $6.875 million spinal-injury recovery, and every catastrophic-injury case is built around the lifetime of medical care, equipment, and lost earning capacity the client now faces.
Sexual Abuse
The May Firm represents survivors of sexual abuse against institutions, employers, and individuals. The firm's notable results include a $10 million settlement for a sexual-abuse survivor. These cases are handled with discretion, trauma-informed practice, and the same trial-ready preparation as any other matter.
Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist
When the at-fault driver has no insurance or insufficient coverage, The May Firm pursues the client's own uninsured-motorist (UM) and underinsured-motorist (UIM) policy — coverage California insurers are required to offer. Robert handles UM/UIM claims that other firms turn down because they require fighting your own carrier.
Defective Products
The May Firm handles California product-liability cases involving defective airbags, child car seats, seat belts, pharmaceutical products, and auto-component defects. These cases are built against manufacturers and component suppliers — not just the consumer-facing seller.

Every consultation with The May Firm is free, confidential, and held with a real attorney — not a salesperson. Prospective clients can call (866) 721-7922 around the clock, request a callback through mayfirm.com, or visit any of the firm's nine California offices in person. During the consultation, Robert May or another firm attorney reviews the accident, evaluates injuries and damages, explains California law on liability and statute of limitations, and gives an honest read on the case's strengths and weaknesses. The firm works on contingency: no fees unless The May Firm recovers compensation. For clients who are hospitalized or unable to travel, the firm offers home and hospital visits and video consultations. Bilingual (English / Spanish) consultations are available statewide.
